Demolition of the Chadwick Hotel was awarded to I&R Demolition on behalf of Camilleri Construction. The project consisted of demolishing the 73 bedroom hotel on St Anne’s promenade to make way for new luxury apartments with the demolition and site clearance carried out over an 8 week period.
The building was only 3 metres away from the property next door which was the main safety concern. With this in mind we scaffolded both elevations that backed on to neighbouring properties and debris netted the scaffold for maximum protection. The demolition was undertaken using our long reach excavator with selector grab attachment.
The location of the building meant it was very open to the elements being situated on the promenade exposing it to harsh wind a weather coming in off the sea. We had to take extra precautions and monitor the wind levels during demolition activity stopping works if winds became too strong. With the winds changing throughout the day we had dust suppression on the excavators arm also ground based suppression to minimise and keep the dust as low as possible.
As there was minimal room to work round the property for machines / skips we had to ensure our waste management plan was bang on and ensure that the demolition waste was removed as fast as it was generated. To the rear of the site was the swimming pool and gymnasium which was at basement level. Hydraulic breakers and pulverisers were brought in to remove this structure as it had been sheet piled to a depth of 5 metres.
Once all the demolition and remediation was complete we crushed the hardcore and exported it off site for future use then imported topsoil to cap off the building footprint leaving the site clean tidy and appealing on the promenade.
