I&R Demolition Ltd was awarded the contract for the demolition and crushing works at Louisa Street in Manchester. This site has been sat derelict for many years and was once the site of a former steel foundry. Our scope of works included the demolition of all buildings and structures on site, excavation of foundations and yard area, crushing all hardcore arising from demolition and excavation to 6f2 which would be reused on site during the construction. The site was being cleared to make way for a mix of new housing and an apartment block.
The demolition was carried out using our 20 ton + 30 ton excavators fitted with selector grab attachment and all materials segregated into roll on roll off skips as we progressed. The boundary of the building on Louisa Street was very right up the footpath and as it was a blue route for police / emergency services we couldn’t shut the road for the demolition works. With this in mind we erected a full scaffold on the Louisa Street elevation temporarily closing the footpath and demolished the building by hand level by level as the safest possible method.
This site was subject to a 10 week archaeological excavation which uncovered remains of the old steel foundry consisting of old engine and machine beds, chimney bases, tunnels and blast furnace beds. Once all the historical excavations where completed and recorded they could be removed. At the far end of the site we uncovered old cellars which had to be excavated and backfilled with crushed 6f2 in compacted layers.
Once all the excavation and demolition was complete all hardcore generated was crushed and retained on site.
During this project we hit a lot of unexpected and additional foundations and cellars from previous uses of the site along with all the archaeological findings. Even with all the additional works the site was handed back to the client 4 weeks early enabling roads and sewer construction to start sooner then expected. Our works were completed in 16 weeks in total.
