I&R Demolition were awarded the contract for the demolition works at The Sandpiper in Thornton, Cleveleys by Tyson Construction to make way for 3 story flats and bungalows. The Demolition package included asbestos removal, demolition and piling mat installation. The project was completed in a 4 week period with the asbestos removal being undertaken first by a licensed removal contractor. Once all the asbestos had been removed the building was internally stripped of loose furniture, studded walls, fixtures and fittings ready for demolition to start.
The 2 part structure consisted of single story traditional brick construction with a wooden timber pitch roof where the bar and lounge area was and a 2 story brick construction with wooden pitch roof for the beer cellar and upstairs accommodation. Demolition was undertaken using our 22 ton demolition excavator fitted with selector grab processing materials into wood/waste/steel as the job progressed. Once the demolition was complete the floor slabs and foundations where removed using a hydraulic breaker attachment. All the hardcore material was stockpiled and crushed into 6f2 to be reused on site in the construction, with the demolition works being completed in a 2 week period.
As the site was being piled we installed the piling mat, to do this we undertook a reduced level excavation on the build area and removed the excavated earth off site. Once this was complete we then installed a geogrid system and built the whole area up with crushed 6f2 from the demolition in 300mm compacted in layers to ensure maximum ground stability for the piling rig.
The site was located in a residential area which meant extra careful planning was required with site deliveries avoiding traffic delays in the area. Up to date noise monitoring was carried out on our machines throughout demolition and the crushing process to ensure we didn’t exceed the maximum noise level.
